STATE OF TEXAS October 13, 1999
TO: State Agency Board/Commission Chair I would like to invite you to an important event. On November 15, 1999, I will be hosting my biennial conference on excellence in Texas state government. This year the conference is entitled, "Texas Vision and Leadership for the Next Century." It will be held from 8:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the State Capitol Extension Auditorium. The dual themes of vision and leadership speak to the importance I place on both planning ahead and moving forward in a determined, thoughtful manner. In 1995, the conference centered on effective tools and methods for performance management. The 1997 conference dealt with achieving and maintaining high standards. This conference will examine the impact that demographic and technological developments have had and will have on what is expected of state government and how those expectations are met. At the conference you will hear from academic, business, and government leaders on these developments the challenges presented, the opportunities created, and the benefits realized. As public officials, we share a common interest and responsibility to ensure that the needs of our citizens continue to be well served. The efforts and innovations of your agencies are essential to fulfilling this responsibility. Because of limited seating capacity, this invitation is extended to board/commission chairs and CEOs. A website with additional information on the conference has been established at http://www.survey.utexas.edu/governor/. Please register your attendance via the website or by calling (512) 475-8117. If you have other questions, you may call Albert Hawkins, my Director of Budget and Planning, at (512) 463-1778. I look forward to seeing you there and working with you as we strive to make Texas an even better place to live, do business, and raise families.
